Myofunctional Therapy in Snoring and Sleep Apnea: Oropharyngeal Exercises and Sleep Disordered Breathing

Focused on myofunctional therapy as a noninvasive treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. This clinical approach utilizes oropharyngeal exercises to strengthen the muscles of the tongue and throat, addressing the hypotonic phenotype where airway collapse is caused by poor muscle tone. The text traces the historical evolution of these techniques from early 20th-century orthodontics to contemporary integration within multidisciplinary sleep medicine. Detailed chapters explore diagnostic tools like ultrasound and endoscopy, the epidemiological impact of sleep disorders across different ethnicities, and the economic burden of untreated apnea. Ultimately, the work advocates for a personalized and holistic approach, positioning muscle rehabilitation as a critical adjunct or alternative to traditional therapies like CPAP and surgery.
