Health Behavior Change in the Dental Practice

A multidisciplinary resource designed to help dental professionals improve patient outcomes through effective communication. The authors emphasize that clinical expertise alone is often insufficient for treating chronic oral diseases, as success frequently depends on modifying patient lifestyles and behaviors. By moving away from traditional, authoritative "directing" styles, clinicians can adopt a "guiding" approach that respects patient autonomy and addresses the natural ambivalence people feel toward change. The book introduces evidence-based psychological frameworks, such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), and practical communication tools like OARS (open questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing). Ultimately, the source serves as a guide for transforming the dental visit into a collaborative partnership focused on long-term wellness rather than just operative procedures.
