Essentials of Dental Caries

A textbook designed for dental students and oral healthcare professionals. The authors, Edwina Kidd and Ole Fejerskov, emphasize that dental caries is a manageable disease caused by metabolic activity within the dental biofilm, rather than an inevitable condition requiring endless surgical repair. They define the disease as a dynamic process of mineral loss and gain influenced by diet, saliva, and oral hygiene. A central theme is the critique of the restorative cycle, arguing that fillings do not cure the disease and that focusing on prevention and behavior change is the only way to effectively preserve teeth for a lifetime. The text also classifies various lesion types based on their location and whether they are active or arrested, which determines the necessary clinical response. Ultimately, the source serves as a guide for shifting dental practice toward evidence-based caries control and long-term oral health maintenance.
