Endodontic Irrigation: Chemical disinfection of the root canal system

From Dentistry Made Simple Dentistry Made Simple

A comprehensive medical textbook titled Endodontic Irrigation: Chemical Disinfection of the Root Canal System, edited by Bettina Basrani. The literature emphasizes that while mechanical cleaning is a traditional pillar of root canal therapy, chemical irrigation is essential for eliminating the complex microbial biofilms that persist in unreachable areas of the tooth. These biofilms represent a protected mode of bacterial growth that grants microorganisms up to a 1,000-fold increase in resistance to standard antibiotics and clinical treatments. The chapters outline the stages of biofilm development, the physical and biological mechanisms behind their antimicrobial resistance, and the advanced microscopic techniques used to study them. Additionally, the text evaluates various disinfecting solutions, such as sodium hypochlorite, alongside emerging technologies like laser activation and photo-activated disinfection. Ultimately, the source serves as a specialized guide for clinicians to improve patient management through a deeper understanding of root canal microbiology and evolving irrigation strategies.
