Januar 1934 legten Irène und Frederic Joliot-Curie der Schwedischen Akademie der Wissenschaften ein sensationelles Forschungsergebnis vor: Es war ihnen gelungen, künstliche Radioaktivität herzustellen. Dafür gab es postwendend den Nobelpreis, womit Irène in die Fußstapfen ihrer berühmten Mutter Marie Curie trat.
