Lange hatte Portugal ein Monopol inne, was den Handel mit Indien anlangte. Schließlich hatte der Portugiese Vasco da Gama den Seeweg nach Indien entdeckt. Dieser war ein wohlgehütetes Geheimnis, bis der niederländische Kaufmann, Autor, Entdecker und Spion Jan Huygen van Linschoten nach Lissabon kam.
