Psalm Chapter 77 - To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph
Psalm 77: The Night Song
This is the psalm of a man who cannot sleep. Not restless exactly — wounded. His soul refuses to be comforted; God himself seems to have shut up his tender mercies. And then, somewhere near the middle, something shifts. Not the circumstance, not the ache — only the direction of his gaze. "I will remember the works of the Lord," he says, almost talking himself into it. "Surely I will remember thy wonders of old." What follows is some of the Psalter's most cinematic imagery: the waters afraid, the depths troubled, the voice of God's thunder rolling through the sky. It is as if Asaph, unable to pray the present, decides to pray the past — and finds the past still warm to the touch. The psalm does not resolve with a tidy ending; it simply ends with Moses and Aaron, leading a flock through waters too great to see. Sometimes that is all faith has. Sometimes that is enough.
