Psalm Chapter 75 - To the chief Musician, Al-taschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph
Psalm 75: Neither East Nor West
There is a quiet, startling verse in this short psalm that is worth hanging on the wall: "Promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another." Asaph has surveyed the whole horizon — every direction from which the ambitious scan for their next opportunity — and he has found them all empty-handed. The rising and the falling of human lives do not come from networking or timing or luck; they come from a hand the eye cannot see. This is not meant as a sedative to dull our striving. It is a relief — the relief of knowing that you are not, after all, the manager of your own ascent. The psalm's final image is strange and sobering: a cup in the Lord's hand, full of mixed wine, from which the wicked will drink even the dregs. Justice, in the end, is not merely declared; it is poured out. And in a world that spends most of its energy looking east and west for advantage, Asaph quietly turns our gaze upward, where it should have been all along.
