Psalm Chapter 50 - A Psalm of Asaph
Psalm 50: The God Who Does Not Need Your Goat
Asaph opens the scene like a curtain rising on a cosmic courtroom. God summons the earth, east to west, and the heavens above as witnesses. You brace yourself for the accusation — and then comes one of the most unexpected lines in the Old Testament: "I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices." The problem was never that the people had stopped sacrificing. The problem was that they had somehow convinced themselves God needed their bullocks, as if the Almighty were a particularly hungry neighbor at the end of the lane. "If I were hungry, I would not tell thee," God says, almost with a smile, "for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof." It is one of those moments when you realize you have been misunderstanding the relationship entirely. What God actually asks for cannot be bought at any market: thanksgiving, uprightness of life, the honest cry of a heart in trouble. Those, it turns out, are the only sacrifices he has ever really wanted.
