Athena Strand's Killer Fights Against Death Penalty | True Crime News

The punishment phase is underway in Texas for Tanner Horner, the FedEx driver who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and killing 7-year-old Athena Strand, and this week his own mother took the stand to testify about a childhood defined by addiction and abuse in a bid to spare him from the death penalty. In Oregon, a 73-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the 1983 murder of his girlfriend, a cold case that sat open for more than four decades before a skull found in 1997 was finally identified through modern DNA testing. In California, a first-grade teacher was stabbed to death inside her home in an early morning attack that also left her 25-year-old daughter hospitalized.
