After moving to New Hampshire to rejoin his girlfriend, Lizzie, photographer Adam notices strange changes in her behavior and hears a ghostly male voice whispering through the apartment's air vents. These eerie occurrences escalate when Adam spots a mysterious man in their home, whom Lizzie reveals as Gabriel—a specter from the past who claims she is his long-lost love, "Arabeth." Uncovering through his camera that the apartment transforms into an antique setting possessed by Gabriel's spirit, a helpless Adam is attacked by the ghost, forced to leave his trance-like girlfriend behind, and flees down the coast with Lizzie's cat while plotting how to eventually return and save her from the haunting grip.
