The Boggs-Begich Disappearance: Lost in Alaska

In this episode of Conspiracy Theories, Cults, & Crimes, Vanessa Richardson examines the 1972 disappearance of House Majority Leader Hale Boggs and Alaska Congressman Nick Begich, whose small plane vanished over the Alaskan wilderness during a campaign trip. As a powerful Louisiana politician and member of the Warren Commission, Boggs had publicly questioned aspects of the JFK assassination investigation, a fact that later fueled conspiracy theories about political motives behind the crash. Begich, a rising political figure in Alaska, was also aboard the aircraft along with an aide and the pilot. Despite one of the largest search and rescue operations in U.S. history, no wreckage was ever recovered. This episode traces the political careers of Boggs and Begich, the events leading up to the doomed flight, the massive search effort, and the enduring mystery that continues to spark debate about one of America’s most puzzling unsolved aviation disappearances.
