Give Us a King
This sermon examines the request of Israel's elders for a human king in 1 Samuel 8, identifying the core issue not as leadership instability but as a rejection of God's direct rule. The preacher argues that the elders used legitimate grievances as excuses to pursue a desire to be like the surrounding nations, exchanging the difficult security of faith for the apparent security of visible, worldly structures. The message warns that sin often manifests as a refusal to let Christ reign over every aspect of life, and that God's judgment may sometimes involve granting what is demanded to reveal its true cost. By contrasting the taking nature of earthly kings with the giving nature of Jesus Christ, the sermon calls believers to examine their motives, resist the temptation to imitate the world, and trust in the unseen King who fights their battles.
