The Wonder

The provided Book introduces the novel The Wonder by Emma Donoghue, a fictional story inspired by historical accounts of "Fasting Girls." The narrative begins with Nurse Lib Wright's journey to a remote Irish village to observe Anna O'Donnell, an eleven-year-old girl purportedly surviving without food. As Lib investigates Anna's case, she encounters skepticism, religious fervor, and potential fraud, all while battling her own internal struggles and growing feelings for a local journalist. The excerpts highlight themes of faith, science, deception, and the power dynamics within families and communities during a time of famine. Ultimately, Lib must decide whether to expose a potential hoax or intervene to save a child's life, challenging the prevailing beliefs and expectations surrounding her. The book's ending provides resolution as the nurse runs away with the girl and a journalist, and the author explains in the author's note that the story is historical fiction.
