The Story of a New Name: A Novel (Neapolitan Novels, 2)

Introduces the complex lives and relationships within a neighborhood in Naples. The text begins with a detailed index of characters, outlining several families—such as the Cerullos, Grecos, and Carraccis—and their intertwined histories of labor, love, and rivalry. A central focus is the discovery of eight notebooks written by Lila, which the narrator, Elena, eventually throws into a river to escape her friend's overwhelming influence. The narrative then shifts to the tension of Lila’s wedding feast, where a betrayal by her new husband, Stefano, signals the immediate emotional end of their marriage. Amidst this drama, Elena and her boyfriend Antonio grapple with jealousy and intense physical longing as they navigate their own uncertain future. Ultimately, the source illustrates the suffocating social dynamics and deep-seated resentments that define the characters' transition into adulthood.
