The Silent Patient

A psychological thriller by Alex Michaelides centered on the enigmatic Alicia Berenson. After being discovered at a gruesome crime scene where her husband was shot to death, Alicia falls into a permanent silence and is committed to a secure psychiatric facility. The narrative is framed by Theo Faber, a driven forensic psychotherapist who becomes obsessed with her case and her cryptic self-portrait titled Alcestis. Theo reveals his own troubled history of childhood abuse and a past suicide attempt, which motivated him to pursue a career in mental health. By securing a position at the hospital where Alicia is held, he hopes to finally uncover the truth behind her long-standing refusal to speak. This introductory text establishes a dark atmosphere of psychological trauma and professional obsession.
