The Shining

Provide an introductory look at Stephen King’s horror novel, The Shining, through a table of contents and early narrative excerpts. The story begins with Jack Torrance interviewing for a seasonal position as the winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, a secluded and grand resort in the Colorado mountains. During the meeting, the manager, Stuart Ullman, expresses deep reservations about Jack’s suitability due to his history of alcoholism and a past violent outburst at a school. Ullman also reveals a chilling account of a previous caretaker who succumbed to "cabin fever" and murdered his entire family. Meanwhile, the text transitions to Jack's wife, Wendy, and their young son, Danny, as they wait at their home in Boulder and reflect on the family's fragile stability. Through their eyes, the narrative establishes a sense of impending dread and highlights Jack’s struggle to secure a future for his family despite his troubled past.
