The Meaning of Witchcraft

A foundational work that redefined modern Wicca as a survival of an ancient, pre-Christian European religion. Written in 1959, the book challenges the historical narrative that witchcraft was synonymous with Satanism, arguing instead that it originated in Stone Age fertility cults. Gardner utilizes his background as an anthropologist and museum director to provide a "frequently asked questions" approach to the Old Religion, addressing common misconceptions like the "Black Mass." He emphasizes that practitioners are pagans who utilize the human body as a reservoir of natural power, often performing rites in ritual nudity to focus this energy. The sources highlight Gardner’s role as the "Grandfather of Wicca" and underscore the book’s enduring influence on contemporary spirituality and folklore. Ultimately, the text serves as both a historical defense of the craft and a practical guide for those seeking to understand its esoteric roots.
