The Last Gift: By the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature

An aging man who suffers a debilitating health crisis that reveals long-hidden physical and emotional vulnerabilities. After collapsing at his home in England, his wife Maryam navigates the complexities of his recovery while grappling with his uncharacteristic irritability and silence. The narrative shifts to explore Maryam’s own history, detailing her childhood as an abandoned baby and her formative years in foster care. Her reflections also revisit the couple’s early romance in Exeter, highlighting her escape from a restrictive domestic life to be with Abbas. Ultimately, the text illustrates a family dealing with the consequences of aging and the weight of unspoken pasts.
