The History of Tom Jones: a Foundling

Through the table of contents and introductory chapters, the author establishes the work as an expansive examination of human nature, which he metaphorically describes as a diverse "bill of fare" for the reader's entertainment. Fielding includes a formal dedication to George Lyttleton, credits his patrons for their support, and asserts his authorial right to use wit and humor to expose social follies. The narrative begins in Somersetshire, introducing the wealthy and virtuous Squire Allworthy, who discovers the infant protagonist. Throughout these opening sections, the author frequently addresses the reader directly, defending his literary techniques and his intent to promote goodness and innocence over vice. Under this 2019 digital edition by Global Grey, the text maintains its original structure of eighteen books that chronicle the journey of the young foundling.
