The Denial of Death

Explores the psychological premise that the universal fear of mortality serves as the primary driver of human behavior. He argues that individuals construct a "vital lie" of character and participate in cultural hero systems to gain a sense of lasting worth and escape the terror of their own finitude. By synthesizing the insights of Sigmund Freud, Otto Rank, and Søren Kierkegaard, the book examines how these attempts to transcend death can paradoxically lead to human evil and destruction. Becker suggests that true heroism involves acknowledging our vulnerability rather than hiding behind illusions of permanence. This influential work ultimately seeks to merge psychology and religion into a cohesive "science of man" that explains our struggle for meaningful survival. This 1973 text remains a profound analysis of the intersection between existential anxiety and the structures of society.
