The Catcher in the Rye

Presenting the narrative from the highly colloquial and candid first-person perspective of Holden Caulfield. These passages reveal Holden's immediate circumstances, including his recent expulsion from Pencey Prep school and his subsequent, aimless wanderings and encounters in New York City over a few days. The narration is dominated by Holden's cynical observations and judgments about the "phoniness" of the adult world and many peers, contrasted with moments of genuine connection and concern, particularly regarding his deceased brother Allie and his younger sister Phoebe. Key events include his fights with a pimp and elevator man, a confusing visit with a former teacher Mr. Antolini, and his ultimate decision to return home after a deeply emotional meeting with Phoebe on a carousel, which marks a turning point in his despair. Throughout the excerpts, Holden struggles with themes of grief, isolation, immaturity, and an intense desire to protect childhood innocence.
