Shaman: The Mysterious Life and Impeccable Death of Carlos Castaneda

Focusing heavily on the life and controversial career of author Carlos Castaneda, whose works on shamanism and non-ordinary reality became immensely popular. Much of the text is dedicated to exploring the complexities and contradictions in Castaneda’s personal history and his anthropological claims, with details supplied by his ex-wife, Margaret Runyan, and the experiences of followers like Jeremy Davidson and Melissa Ward. A significant portion of the excerpt also features two "Followers," Greg and Gaby, engaging in clandestine trash retrieval from Castaneda’s compound in an attempt to uncover the truth about his secretive life. This text also discusses the emergence of Cleargreen and Tensegrity, the commercial ventures Castaneda and his inner circle launched later in his career, and includes praise for Sager’s writing style.
