Pinball

Introduces a narrator with a peculiar fondness for hearing stories from strangers about their hometowns, collecting them like a "bear getting ready for hibernation." The narrative also follows the Rat, a character grappling with loneliness and the passage of time. Both individuals encounter various unusual situations and characters, including twin girls who mysteriously appear in the narrator's apartment and a Spanish lecturer with an obsessive knowledge of obscure pinball machines. The story explores themes of memory, loss, and the search for meaning through vivid descriptions of mundane yet significant objects and events, such as the disappearance of a cherished pinball machine and the funeral of a telephone switch-panel. Ultimately, both the narrator and the Rat experience a sense of profound solitude and change as their respective journeys lead them to confront the impermanence of things and relationships.
