On Duties: A Guide To Conduct, Obligations, And Decision-Making

A practical guide to conduct, obligations, and decision-making, exploring the relationship between moral goodness (honestas) and expediency or advantageousness (utilitas). The commentary sections discuss the work's enduring influence, Cicero's tumultuous political career and personal life, and the translator's intent to provide a new, accessible, and heavily annotated English translation that presupposes no prior knowledge of Roman history. Core themes from the text include the necessity of justice, benevolence, and constancy in human affairs, the dangers of tyranny and greed, and the importance of adhering to Nature's laws by prioritizing the common good over personal gain.
