Nuns and Nunneries in Renaissance Florence

Examines the social, economic, and religious life of nuns and convents in Renaissance Florence, a historically understudied aspect of the Florentine church. It explores how these institutions, often composed of upper-class women, functioned as significant civic entities, shaped by kinship networks, patronage, and political alliances rather than solely spiritual concerns. The text details the financial structures of convents, including their reliance on real estate, dowries, and labor like metallic thread production, contrasting their wealth with that of male religious houses and leading citizens. Furthermore, it analyzes the evolution of enclosure and monastic regulations, revealing the complex interactions between nuns, bishops, and the broader Florentine society, particularly during periods of reform and political upheaval.
