Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India

This compilation centers around a collection of personal narratives and cultural insights from various individuals in India, highlighting diverse spiritual and traditional practices. It features accounts from a Jain nun, a Theyyam dancer possessed by deities, women forced into the life of devadasis, and a traditional epic singer (bhopa) who narrates the story of Pabuji through performance with his wife. Additionally, the text includes perspectives from a Sufi devotee at a lively shrine, a Tibetan monk who joined the resistance and fought in wars, and a hereditary idol maker (Stpathy) carrying on an ancient craft. These stories collectively illustrate how individuals in modern India navigate the intersection of their deeply rooted traditions and the forces of contemporary change, revealing both the resilience and the fragility of these cultural forms and the personal journeys within them.
