Nightmare Alley: Film Noir and the American Dream

Examine the American Dream and its inherent contradictions. The texts analyze how noir cinema frequently portrays individualism and the pursuit of happiness as leading to alienation and pre-determined fates, often through the struggles of protagonists grappling with societal obstacles rather than just personal flaws. A significant portion of the discussion focuses on identity and self-reinvention, highlighting how various noir films depict characters attempting to escape their pasts or adopt new personas, often with limited success or through morally ambiguous means. Furthermore, the collection addresses themes of memory and trauma, particularly in the context of World War II veterans, as well as the depiction of gender roles, class inequality, and the influence of jazz music within the genre, sometimes connecting these elements to the historical context of the Hollywood blacklist and critiques of unchecked capitalism.
