Nature Exposed: Photography as Eyewitness in Victorian Science

Explores the intersection of photography and Victorian science, specifically examining how photographic practices shaped scientific understanding and public perception during the era. The text highlights photography's role in various scientific fields, such as meteorology, bacteriology, and astronomy, often contrasting its perceived objectivity with artistic interpretations. It also details the social and cultural dynamics surrounding early photography, including the rise of amateur photographers, the commercialization of the medium, and public debates over the authenticity of images, particularly in the contentious realm of spirit photography. The sources further discuss the development of photographic techniques and their impact on scientific methodology, as well as the ways in which mass media, like illustrated newspapers, influenced the dissemination and reception of scientific information and photographic evidence.
