Nature and History in the Potomac Country: From Hunter-Gatherers to the Age of Jefferson

Explores the environmental and cultural history of the Potomac River basin, focusing on the interplay between nature and human societies from pre-colonial times through the American Revolution. The author examines the transformative impact of Native American adaptations, such as the shift from foraging to agriculture, and the complex social and political structures that emerged among Algonquian and Iroquoian peoples. It further investigates the profound changes brought by European colonization, detailing the contrasting ecological imaginations of English settlers and Native Americans, the dispossession of indigenous lands, and the development of a colonial economy centered on tobacco and enslaved labor. Ultimately, the text illustrates how diverse migrations and conflicts shaped the region's landscape and demographics, leading to a dynamic and often violent struggle for control and survival.
