Narrative as Virtual Reality 2: Revisiting Immersion and Interactivity in Literature and Electronic Media

Explores the concepts of immersion and interactivity within both literary texts and electronic media. The author examines how readers and users engage with fictional worlds, considering the historical evolution of immersive techniques from Baroque art to modern virtual reality. Ryan contrasts the "text as world" metaphor, which prioritizes immersion, with the "text as game" metaphor, emphasizing interactivity and rule-based engagement. She further investigates various forms of interactivity in digital narratives, including hypertext, and discusses the challenges and possibilities of combining deep immersion with dynamic user interaction in storytelling across different mediums. Ultimately, the work aims to reconcile these two fundamental aspects of narrative experience in the digital age.
