MOOCs, High Technology, and Higher Learning

Explores the rise and impact of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) within higher education, particularly following their surge in popularity around 2012. It discusses the technological advancements of Web 2.0 that enabled MOOCs and the complex organizational system supporting them, including both public good initiatives and private, profit-driven ventures. The text differentiates between cMOOCs, which emphasize connectivism and social learning, and xMOOCs, more traditional and scalable models often provided by elite institutions. Furthermore, the source addresses the "blowback and resistance" to the MOOC movement, examining critical issues such as pedagogy, potential for cultural hegemony, diversity, and the implications for faculty labor and intellectual property rights. Ultimately, it considers the future of MOOCs and higher learning, advocating for a judicious and critically informed approach to their integration, suggesting hybrid models to enhance student support.
