Mixing Races: From Scientific Racism to Modern Evolutionary Ideas

Explores the complex history of attitudes toward "race mixing" in the United States, particularly during the mid-20th century, highlighting how scientific, social, and legal perspectives evolved. It begins by recounting personal and campus experiences that illustrate the pervasive discrimination against interracial couples in the 1960s, despite ongoing civil rights movements and shifting scientific consensus. The text then traces the scientific understanding of race, from early, arbitrary classifications and the influence of eugenics to the emergence of modern genetics and physical anthropology, which increasingly debunked notions of biological inferiority and harmful "race mixing." Finally, the compilation examines the legal challenges to anti-miscegenation laws, culminating in the landmark Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court decision, and reflects on the slow societal changes that continued even after legal barriers were removed.
