Military Politics and Democracy in the Andes

Explores the complex roles and behaviors of the armed forces in Peru and Ecuador, particularly focusing on their engagement—or lack thereof—in missions beyond traditional external defense. The book examines how military actions are shaped by institutional interests, organizational traumas, and the evolving political landscape in post-transition democracies. Through a comparative analysis, it reveals patterns of mission performance, including reluctant engagement in policing and counterinsurgency, and highlights the influence of factors such as government mandates, public legitimacy, resource availability, and the desire to maintain professionalism. The research also touches on issues of human rights, corruption, and the military's interactions with civilian authorities and private entities in both nations.
