Mennonites, Amish, and the American Civil War

Offers an in-depth examination of the diverse experiences of Mennonite and Amish communities during the American Civil War, highlighting their varied responses to political pressures and conscription based on their geographic location—Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the Midwest. It explores how their religious convictions of nonresistance intersected with the intensely nationalistic fervor of the era, revealing instances of unionist sympathies, Confederate leanings, and efforts to secure conscientious objector status. The text also addresses the economic and social challenges these communities faced, including property loss and the complexities of maintaining their distinct identity amidst a divided nation.
