Lobbyists and the Making of US Tariff Policy, 1816-1861 (Studies in Early American Economy and Society from the Library Company)

Explores the history of US tariff policy from 1816 to 1861, focusing on the influence of lobbying efforts. It details how manufacturing interests, particularly in the North, actively campaigned for protectionist tariffs through petitions, conventions, and direct engagement with lawmakers. The sources reveal the strategies employed by both advocates and opponents of tariffs, including the development of professional lobbying, and examine the complex interplay of economic interests, regional loyalties, and party politics that shaped legislative outcomes during this antebellum period. Ultimately, the text highlights the significant, often underappreciated, role of organized interest groups in crafting crucial economic legislation.
