Licensed to Practice: The Supreme Court Defines the American Medical Profession

Provides a historical overview of the professionalization of medicine in the United States, focusing on the crucial role of state-level licensing laws and their ultimate validation by the U.S. Supreme Court. It highlights the intense conflicts and debates surrounding the regulation of medical practice, particularly the struggle between "Regular" physicians advocating for science-based education and licensing, and those who favored alternative medical approaches or less formal training. The text details the establishment and assertive actions of the West Virginia Board of Health and the landmark Dent v. West Virginia Supreme Court case, which affirmed the state's authority to regulate medical practice and ultimately shaped the legal landscape for medical licensing across the nation, leading to a system of preparation-only licenses that fundamentally transformed the medical profession.
