Land-Grant Universities for the Future: Higher Education for the Public Good

Explores the evolving mission and challenges of land-grant institutions in the United States. The authors emphasize the concept of the "servant university" and the importance of fostering harmonious relationships between campuses and their diverse communities, advocating for an applied research focus and accessible education for all citizens, not just the elite. They discuss critical issues such as declining funding, the tension between research prowess and teaching excellence, and the balance between national rankings and affordability, all viewed through the lens of strengthening public perception and support for these vital institutions. The book integrates historical context, personal anecdotes, and interviews with university leaders, and proposes a roadmap for the future relevance of land-grant universities in addressing societal needs.
