Knights of the Razor: Black Barbers in Slavery and Freedom

Explores the social and economic history of black barbers in America, spanning from the colonial era through the early 20th century. It highlights how these individuals, often starting as enslaved "waiting men," navigated complex racial dynamics to achieve a unique status and economic independence. The text details their rise as respected businessmen and community leaders, even as they faced discrimination, competition from white immigrants, and internal debates about racial pride. Ultimately, it illustrates how black barbers adapted to changing societal conditions, from serving white elite customers in luxurious shops to establishing businesses catering to the growing African American community, thereby contributing significantly to black self-reliance and empowerment.
