Juvenilia (Yale Series of Younger Poets)

This collection, Juvenilia by Ken Chen, is a compilation of poetry from the Yale Series of Younger Poets, featuring a foreword by Louise Glück. The book contains three distinct sections of poems, including "My Father and My Mother Decide My Future and How Could We Forget Wang Wei?", "Banal Love Songs", and "The Invisible Memoir". The works explore complex themes of identity, memory, familial relationships, and the immigrant experience, often employing a unique, fragmented narrative style. Glück's foreword provides critical insights into Chen's innovative approach, highlighting his ability to blend traditional forms with modern sensibilities and his use of displacement as a central metaphor. The acknowledgments also reveal various literary and cultural influences, from Robert Johnson's blues lyrics to ancient Chinese poets like Wang Wei and Li Yu, showcasing the breadth of the material that informs Chen's poetic vision.
