Journalists under Fire: The Psychological Hazards of Covering War

Explores the profound psychological impact of war reporting on journalists. The author, a psychiatrist, details various studies he conducted, funded by organizations like the Freedom Forum and CNN, to understand the emotional and behavioral responses of war correspondents. Through personal anecdotes and interviews with renowned journalists such as Anthony Loyd, Fergal Keane, and James Nachtwey, the book examines trauma, stress, and coping mechanisms, including substance abuse and the development of PTSD. It also contrasts the experiences of male and female journalists, and war correspondents versus domestic journalists exposed to events like 9/11, ultimately revealing the complex motivations and enduring challenges faced by those who bear witness to conflict.
