Johnny Appleseed and the American Orchard: A Cultural History

Offers a comprehensive look into the life of John Chapman, the real man behind the legendary "Johnny Appleseed" figure. It explores his family's Puritan roots and their westward migration, detailing how economic hardships and the changing agricultural landscape, from grafted apple trees to seedling-grown varieties for cider, influenced their lives. The text illuminates Chapman's peculiar, austere lifestyle, which was deeply tied to his Swedenborgian religious beliefs and his mission to spread apple nurseries across the burgeoning American frontier. Finally, the book examines the evolution of the apple industry itself, tracing its shift from diverse local orchards to the dominance of commercial varieties like the Red Delicious and the controversies surrounding pesticides like Alar, ultimately showing how the myth of Johnny Appleseed continues to resonate in contemporary discussions about food and agriculture.
