Inventing the Pinkertons; or, Spies, Sleuths, Mercenaries, and Thugs: Being a story of the nation’s most famous (and infamous) detective age

Explores the Pinkerton National Detective Agency from its founding in 1852 to its later iterations, offering a nuanced perspective on its historical role. It examines the agency's contested purpose and cultural impact as a tool for capitalist interests, a myth in American folklore, and a manifestation of state power. The text details the Pinkertons' involvement in various historical events, including their operations against the Molly Maguires, their clashes with the James-Younger gang in the West, and their controversial role in labor disputes like the Haymarket bombing and the Homestead Strike, which solidified their image as a private army for industry. The source also discusses the agency's efforts to cultivate a detective mythology through popular fiction, as well as the later scrutiny and legislative attempts to curb "Pinkertonism," leading to the state's increased assumption of law enforcement duties. Finally, it draws parallels between the historical Pinkertons and modern private security firms like Blackwater USA, suggesting a recurring theme of privatized authority.
