Instrumental Intimacy: EEG Wearables and Neuroscientific Control

Explores the historical and contemporary relationship between humans and electroencephalography (EEG) wearables. It examines how these devices, moving from laboratories to the consumer market, facilitate an "instrumental intimacy" by allowing individuals to monitor and ostensibly control their brain activity and states of mind, such as arousal and sleep. The book analyzes how EEG technology contributes to new ideas of conscious control and brain plasticity, influencing areas like athletic training and sleep optimization. Ultimately, it investigates the social and cultural implications of these technologies, including their role in self-surveillance and the mapping of emotional geographies within urban environments.
