Imagining Methodism in Eighteenth-Century Britain: Enthusiasm, Belief, and the Borders of the Self

Explores the multifaceted perception of Methodism in 18th-century British society. It examines how Methodism, though rooted in a "method" of disciplined devotional life, was also seen as a religion of feeling and intense emotional experience, often challenging prevailing rationalist views. The text investigates the cultural and literary responses to Methodism, including its portrayal in satires and novels, and how these reflected societal anxieties about gender, sexuality, social class, and the nature of belief in a rapidly secularizing age. Furthermore, it discusses Methodism's impact on public performance, music, and literary style, particularly through its charismatic preachers and congregational hymn singing, highlighting the movement's contested position within the Church of England and its broader influence on British culture.
