Imagined Civilizations: China, the West, and Their First Encounter

Explores British poetry written or circulated in various colonies, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa, during the nineteenth century. Rudy argues that this poetry, found in sources like emigrant ship journals and colonial newspapers, provides unique insights into the experiences of British emigrants and their evolving identities in these new lands. The book examines how colonial poets adapted British literary traditions and forms, reflected on themes of belonging, dislocation, and the concept of "home", and engaged with the political and social realities of their colonial environments, including interactions with indigenous populations and the development of national identities.
