Horse People: Thoroughbred Culture in Lexington and Newmarket (Animals, History, Culture)

Examines the Thoroughbred horse racing industry, with a particular focus on the cultural landscapes and practices in Newmarket, England, and Lexington, Kentucky. It explores the historical development of breeding theories, tracing them back to ancient ideas and noting how they have evolved with the integration of modern science and technology, though traditional beliefs often persist. The sources detail the commercial realities of the industry, including the significant role of sales and auctions, and highlight the labor conditions faced by stable staff in both regions. Ultimately, the text reveals how the self-perceptions and practices of those involved in racing in the UK and the US are shaped by distinct historical trajectories and ongoing economic pressures, often emphasizing perceived differences between the two centers despite underlying similarities.
