Holy Hills of the Ozarks: Religion and Tourism in Branson, Missouri (Lived Religions)

Explores the intertwined history of religion and tourism in Branson, Missouri, focusing on how Christian values and expressions have shaped the region's identity and its appeal as a tourist destination. It examines the influence of Harold Bell Wright's novel "The Shepherd of the Hills" in establishing a moral framework for Ozark tourism, and traces the development of various attractions, from early camp meetings to modern theme parks like Silver Dollar City, which subtly or overtly promote Christian themes. The text also discusses the construction and commodification of the "hillbilly" persona within Branson's tourism, highlighting how it has been redefined to embody traditional Ozark morality and family values, and addresses the ongoing debates surrounding secular entertainment and gambling in a community that fiercely guards its sacred and patriotic image, often reinforced by perceived divine prophecies.
