Higher Education for Women in Postwar America

This extensive Book examines the landscape of higher education for women in the United States between 1945 and 1965, focusing on the expectations, opportunities, and challenges they faced during this postwar period. It explores how societal norms, including the emphasis on domesticity and family life, clashed with women's increasing desire for education and professional careers. The document discusses the role of various organizations and commissions, such as the American Council on Education and the President's Commission on the Status of Women, in advocating for women's educational needs and considering policy changes, while also highlighting the emergence of continuing education programs designed to support women returning to academic and professional pursuits. Ultimately, the text illustrates a complex era where efforts were made to address women's evolving roles, often through individual-focused initiatives, against a backdrop of prevailing cultural, economic, and psychological ideologies.
