Global Markets and Local Crafts: Thailand and Costa Rica Compared

This Book compares handicraft production in Thailand and Costa Rica to understand how globalization affects local artisans. It argues that the success of artisans in the global market depends not just on their skills or social connections, but also on how their cultural traditions are framed and valued by outsiders and their own nation-states. The study examines how "aura," or the perceived authenticity of crafts and their cultural origins, provides a crucial advantage to some communities over others. By analyzing local economic development, social ties, and cultural narratives in both countries, the author demonstrates how artisans navigate the complexities of global commerce. Ultimately, the work identifies key factors that enable some artisan communities to thrive while others struggle in the face of global market forces.
